The Clean Energy and Community Flood Preparedness Act (House Bill 981, Senate Bill 1027) has passed the Virginia General Assembly!
This is a great bill for climate action and energy justice. It commits Virginia to joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). This program, already in place in ten states from Maine to Maryland, reduces carbon emissions from dirty gas- and coal-fired power plants by putting a price on carbon. Joining RGGI would create nearly $1 billion to invest in flood protection for vulnerable residents in Virginia, and low-income energy efficiency gains to keep bills low for everyone.
Senator Lynwood Lewis has championed this initiative for years, and Delegate Charniele Herring has been a huge supporter this year as lead sponsor in the House of Delegates. Let them know that Virginia is proud of their leadership -- it wouldn't have happened without them!
