US Senator Joe Manchin is trying to force a Dirty Deal that would weaken permitting rules. He wants to gut bedrock federal environmental policies to bring more fossil fuels infrastructure online across America.

No one has seen the official legislation yet, but the one-page summary of the deal that was leaked is a disaster. It endangers public health, fast-tracks fossil fuels, and pushes approval for Manchin’s pet project, the Mountain Valley Pipeline. A draft of legislative text that’s circulating is just as bad. It even bears a watermark from the American Petroleum Institute!

As your constituent, I am writing to relay my opposition to the so-called “permitting reform” legislation drafted by the fossil fuel industry and pushed by US Senator Joe Manchin. I urge you to do all you can to oppose and block this legislation. If you are a House member, I hope you will join Congressman Raúl Grijalva's Dear Colleague letter opposing this dirty deal.

Further handouts to the fossil fuel industry are unacceptable. I understand that the final legislation has not been released, but the draft text and one-page summary of the deal is a disaster. It guts bedrock environmental protections, endangers public health, fast-tracks harmful fossil fuel projects, and would push toward completion the Mountain Valley Pipeline along with other dangerous projects.

I am calling on you to pledge right now to oppose all further fossil fuel handouts. Protecting our communities and climate is more important than giving another gift to the fossil fuel industry. Stand with the communities impacted by fossil fuels and the climate crisis and stop the dirty deal!
