Make Polluters Pay

More intense rain and flooding, heat waves, and storm surges are damaging homes and lives in Maryland. These extreme weather events were caused by the fossil fuel companies who knew and lied about the climate crisis. Those fossil fuel companies should be the ones to pay to prepare for and recover from the disasters being caused by the climate crisis.

The climate crisis is making extreme weather events more common and more costly. More intense rain events, heat waves, and storm surges are damaging homes and lives in Maryland today. The storm of the century has become the storm of the decade, and upgrading our stormwater management systems to handle that increased precipitation will be extremely expensive. Howard County is currently planning to spend $228 million to help protect Ellicott City residents from future flooding. That is the biggest capital expenditure in this history of the county, and similar projects are underway across the state.

This past September and June, public schools without air conditioning had to close because it was too hot to come to school; but it would cost more than $700 million to install air conditioning in all the public schools that now need it.

As you know, the state does not have a pot of money sitting around to be used to cover the cost of damages inflicted by the climate crisis. That is why I urge you to support  The Responding to Emergency Needs from Extreme Weather (RENEW) Act, which would create a new revenue source to cover these costs paid for by international fossil fuel companies, not Marylanders or Maryland-based companies.
