Stop Project Pipes

In May of this year, community members submitted over 400 comments to the DC Public Service Commission (PSC) opposing Project Pipes Phase 3 and asking the Commission for public hearings on the matter. Yet our comments were met with silence. No hearing schedule was released, and the PSC is keeping the public in the dark about its decision-making process and timeline.

Washington Gas (WGL) is clearly concerned about the PSC's delay as well, because now they're asking for a 1-year extension for Project Pipes Phase 2 , to the tune of $57 million of ratepayer money, while we await a decision on Phase 3.

Our response? No more money for wasteful and reckless gas infrastructure replacements. Granting WGL an extension for Project Pipes 2 is an approval for business-as-usual, and we are seeing every day how the status quo is not working for us: the planet is warming, our energy prices are increasing, and our children are breathing in toxic air at home.

Submit a comment to the PSC today. Tell them NO to a Project Pipes extension and NO to business-as-usual.

Dear Chairman Thompson, Commissioner Beverly, and Commissioner Trabue,

I am writing to you today to strongly oppose Washington Gas’s recent request for an extension of PROJECTpipes 2, filed under docket 1154.

Approving this request would condone Washington Gas’s business-as-usual approach to locking in fossil gas infrastructure when the District is on the precipice of innovative and necessary changes to its energy economy. Energy bills are becoming increasingly unaffordable for many and our homes are being polluted with toxins from burned methane gas. Continuing to spend hundreds of millions of ratepayers’ dollars on gas pipes only puts DC’s climate targets farther out of reach while prolonging the negative health and climate impacts of methane gas combustion.

We need your Commission to stand-up to the utilities and oversee an equitable transition away from fossil fuels and toward electrification–both of which will benefit ratepayers’ health and safety, and the public interest.

Furthermore, it would be irresponsible to approve an extension of PROJECTpipes 2 before reviewing the audit that this Commission ordered in light of Washington Gas’ poor performance and inability to manage its spending. The Commission should direct Washington Gas to prioritize repairing dangerous leaks instead of installing new gas pipes that will not be needed in the future. We call on you to stop Washington Gas from using our money wastefully.

Please reject Washington Gas’s request for an extension of PROJECTpipes2.
