The Washington Metro Area Transit Authority, or WMATA, is the system of buses and trains that millions of riders from Virginia, Maryland, and DC rely on every year to get to work and school, and access hospitals, restaurants, grocery stores, parks, and more. Right now, WMATA is facing an over $700 million budget shortfall that could cause the authority to drastically cut service and raise fares.

This would be nothing short of a disaster. Transit is at the heart of our movement as a low-carbon climate solution that also improves mobility, promotes density and reduces urban sprawl, and improves health outcomes and quality of life.

Lawmakers in all three jurisdictions are deciding how much to contribute to close this budget gap, and current proposals still leave WMATA about $300 million short – which means reduced frequency and capacity, changes to train lines, and increased fairs.

So email your lawmakers now. Tell them to fully fund WMATA!
