Get mad! BGE and Washington Gas just killed the Better Buildings Act. Tell your legislators it’s outrageous that gas-addicted utilities dictate climate policy in Annapolis. It’s time for electric buildings and an end to gas combustion in new homes.

The Better Buildings Act was supposed to be “low-hanging fruit” during this year’s 90-day Maryland General Assembly session. It would simply require – like Washington, DC, and New York state and Washington state – that new commercial and residential buildings in Maryland include clean-energy heat pumps for hot water and winter heating. It SAVES money on construction and dramatically reduces greenhouse gasses.

As your constituent, I am outraged that BGE and Washington Gas just worked to kill the Better Buildings Act in Annapolis. Spending nearly a million dollars on dozens of lobbyists, the utilities succeeded AGAIN this year in preventing any vote on this legislation that would simply require new buildings to use money-saving electric systems for hot water and space heating.

Governor Wes Moore’s Administration supported the Better Buildings Act as did virtually every environmental group in the state. Yet legislative leaders did not even allow it to come up for a vote. I am angry and appalled at the General Assembly’s lack of action on this critical climate change issue.

We cannot meet our goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions 60% by 2031 in Maryland without electrifying our buildings. I expect you to declare your explicit support for the Better Buildings Act when it comes up for passage next year. I also request that you NOT accept any reelection campaign contributions from BGE and Washington Gas.
