Maryland Governor Wes Moore has made fighting climate change a top priority. Now, with Donald Trump back in the White House, states like Maryland have to fight even harder. So here’s the good news: Right now Governor Moore has the power to support policies that would make dirty energy companies pay their fair share to protect Marylanders from extreme weather while also investing in clean energy.

Dear Governor Moore,

Thank you for your past climate leadership, from offshore wind power to electric buildings.

But now the people of Maryland need you to support the RENEW Act and other fiscal investments in climate solutions! There is no time for delay, especially given changes at the federal level. Please direct your Secretaries to vote to support new revenue raisers for climate action at the Maryland Commission on Climate Change meeting on December 12.

Enacting policies like the RENEW Act and the Coal Transport Fee will raise new revenue from out-of-state fossil fuel companies and bring new dollars into Maryland to help balance the state budget while also investing in clean energy and resiliency.

Maryland can have cleaner, more affordable, and more reliable energy. As your Climate Pollution Reduction Plan states, complying with the Climate Solutions Now Act will “generate up to $1.2 billion in public health benefits, $2.5 billion in increased personal income, and a net gain of 27,400 jobs between now and 2031 as compared with current policies. Average households will save up to $4,000 annually on energy costs. Air quality and public health outcomes will improve for everyone, especially people living in historically underserved and overburdened communities.”

Raising new revenue for climate solutions is what Maryland needs right now, and I urge you to direct the Secretaries who are members of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change to vote for new climate revenue sources on December 12.
