Tell Your Legislators Oppose Legislation That Could Build A New Gas Plant Where You Live!

The Next Generation Energy Act could cause new gas plants to be built at the site of old coal power plants, which is bad news for the Baltimore region. The region could get stuck with new polluting fossil fuel infrastructure at the very moment we were getting off of coal.

But it’s not too late. Email your state lawmakers and ask them to oppose building new gas in Baltimore.

As your constituent I am asking you to oppose the provisions of the Next Generation Energy Act (SB937/HB1035) that could result in a new gas plant in the Baltimore area. The bill encourages new gas plants in the state, but worse than that, the bill encourages new gas plants to be built in the same communities that have historically been burdened by coal plants, which is bad news for Baltimore.

We all know that the communities that have lived in the shadow of smoke stacks for decades are the most deserving of protection from new polluting sources, but the Next Generation Energy Act does the opposite. The bill drives new pollution to the communities that have historically hosed the pollution.

The Next Generation Energy Act says explicitly that if a new gas plant is proposed at the site of an old coal plant then the new gas plant will be exempt from critical air quality permits and shall be granted their Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity. This would all but ensure that anyone trying to build a gas plant in Maryland will want to build it at the location of old coal plants.

This is the opposite of environmental justice and this is bad news for Baltimore. Two coal plants just south of Baltimore, Brandon Shores and Wagner coal plants, are about to retire, but instead of allowing the Baltimore area to breathe cleaner air, this bill could end up building new dirty power plants in the exact same place.
