Black and Brown communities are on the frontlines of the climate crisis due to historical, intentional vulnerabilities that are often baked into the fabric of our communities. The combined effects of community features such as limited tree cover, the health impacts of environmental racism, and the economic inequities of an unjust society, all work to increase Black and Brown communities’ exposure to extreme weather while reducing their ability to recover from such events.

The climate crisis is making extreme weather events more frequent and more costly. This summer we saw more intense rain events, heat waves, and flash flooding damaging homes and lives. We are experiencing the effects and costs of these impacts in Maryland right now!

That’s why the Maryland legislature passed the Responding to Emergency Needs from Extreme Weather Act (RENEW Act) study bill, SB0149/HB0128. This bill is designed to help Marylanders ultimately cope with greater floods and storms and other climate impacts. It is vital information for our state.

Climate change is a threat multiplier for the exposures that already exist in our communities due to historical practices such as redlining and other inequitable government practices. That’s why the Maryland General Assembly passed the Maryland Reparations Commission bill, HB1422/SB0587, to determine recommendations for righting these wrongs.

I urge you to override both of these vetoes. Please stand with Marylanders and help our most vulnerable populations.
