Solar siting reform for an affordable energy future

Solar energy is the cornerstone of an affordable, clean energy future for Virginia. Electricity bills have skyrocketed in the Commonwealth over the last five years thanks to high gas fuel costs and grid capacity constraints imposed by data centers.

The solution is solar – a low-cost, fuel-free energy resource that insulates ratepayers from fuel price shocks and produces zero pollution. In fact, utility-scale solar – and on-shore wind – are the cheapest sources of electricity across the board, even without federal tax incentives. By contrast, electricity from gas peaking plants like the Chesterfield gas plant costs over twice as much as electricity produced and dispatched from solar and battery storage projects, which serve the same function.

We cannot control rising electric bills or achieve a 100% clean energy future without lots of new, utility-scale solar projects. But right now, over 55 localities have banned or severely restricted solar farms. In order to meet demand affordably, we urge you to pass solar siting reforms that allow good solar projects to interconnect to the grid statewide.
