Climate Justice Now!

We fight to stop climate cuts in D.C.’s budget every. single. year. This year, we’re looking at nearly one third of the entire budget for the Department of Energy and Environment gone.

But another world is possible! D.C. could establish a climate superfund to fund environmental programs, and require the multibillion dollar fossil fuel companies responsible for the climate crisis to cover the bill. The first step to getting us there is a study to determine exactly how big that bill should be. And we need $200,000 in this year’s budget to get the study done. Councilmember Allen and the members of the Committee on Transportation and Environment have the power to fund this study. Write a letter to them now demanding they fund the study and pass a green budget!

Please dedicate at least $200,000 in funding for the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Study Amendment Act in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget.

This study is critical to help the District government, residents, businesses, and developers plan for extreme weather fueled by climate change such as flooding and extreme heat. And it is critical for the future financial health of the District, because it will evaluate the true cost of climate change in the District of Columbia. With federal funding for disasters more uncertain than ever before and critical infrastructure like the Potomac Interceptor already failing, the District must be prepared for disaster. This study ensures we can prepare in advance, rather than be caught unaware after the fact.

This study could also help us towards securing funding from multibillion dollar fossil fuel companies to spend on infrastructure and environmental programs. Every year we struggle to fund necessary upgrades to schools and public buildings, roads and transit, conservation and clean energy programs, and more. Climate superfunds in other states have raised billions of dollars for essential infrastructure upgrades and environmental programs. A similar superfund in D.C. would get us out of the endless loop of climate cuts in every budget for good.

You have the power to move D.C. towards a truly sustainable budget for decades to come! Please take action this year and dedicate at least $200,000 for the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Study Amendment Act in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget.
